CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) -  Chattanooga's very own; Bliss Welch,31, took first runner-up in the Miss Wheelchair America competition in Houston.

"It was amazing and I met so many incredible women and it was just a once in a lifetime experience," Welch said

Welch was greeted at the Chattanooga airport by the same family and friends who cheered her on when she became miss Wheelchair Tennessee back in the spring.

"I had such a great week and no tears were shed until I saw all these wonderful and amazing people who have just loved and supported me the whole time I've been gone," Welch said.

Welch is a University of Tennessee Chattanooga graduate student who was diagnosed with muscular dystrophy when she was a teenage. The disease eventually took over and she lost her ability to walk by the time she was in her late 20's.

Since becoming Miss Wheelchair Tennessee, Welch has used her new found fame to bring awareness to people with disabilities.
