MCMINN COUNTY, TN (WDEF-TV) A murder that happened on the 4th of July leaves one McMinn County family wondering why and how this could happen to a young man they say had no enemies.
McMinn County Sheriff’s department said 20-year-old Tyler Womack was found dead in a neighbor’s yard by his grandmother.
This all began to unfold after Tyler's grandmother heard a "pop" noise and then went to look for her grandson.
Tyler’s mother, Melanie Smith said she can’t believe it.
"We really are just dumb-founded right now,” said Melanie. “We're in shock."
Melanie said he was putting air in his grandmother's tires as he always did, but never returned.
"This is my 20-year-old son, that's been shot,” said Melanie.
"It's so sad that she had to be the one to find him,” said family friend Marie Underwood. “She can never get it out of her head. She doesn't deserve that either."
Melanie said she heard reports about her son's death on Facebook, but didn't believe them.
"I saw it for myself, and I just fell to my knees,” Melanie said.
She still can't understand who would do this to Tyler. She said he was a person who had no enemies and always helped others.
She added, "He was a goodhearted smiling happy on the time."
She said Tyler has no kids, no wife, and was even in the army for a short stint. She is just overwhelmed that her smiling 20-year-old son is no longer smiling by her side.
"He's saved, and God has got him in his arms, but he did not deserve what he got here,” said Melanie.
Sheriff Joe Guy and the McMinn County Sheriff's Department do not have any suspects.
