For a lot of veterans across our viewing area, old age can sometimes be just a debilitating at war itself.

Charlie Hobbs, President of the Vietnam Veterans of Chattanooga Chapter 203, says, "As you get older, you take the independence away, it's rough."

No one knows that better than former World War II Veteran and Hamilton County Deputy, John Lanham.

All of his medical equipment is now being donated to Chapter 203.

He died a couple of weeks ago at the age of 93.

Captain Lenda Clark , with the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office, says, "I think he would be most proud today to see where it's going."

It's going to Chapter 203 in Lanham's honor.

Hobbs adds, "A lot of veterans get help through the VA, but we also have veterans who don't have that opportunity, and we'll make sure this goes to a needy veteran, as well as any other items."

Hamilton County Sheriff Jim Hammond knew Lanham, and is vet himself.

So, he was happy to facilitate this donation, and hopes more continue in the future.

Sheriff Hamond adds, "We have a lot of pride in Hamilton County for our veterans and I think people listening will say, you know, I got one."

You might not realize just how much these wheelchairs and walkers are needed in the county you live in.

Hobbs says, "We get calls especially around the holiday season. We get calls from people actually in need of different items."

And something else you may not know.

These wheels symbolize independence, freedom, two things these folks say, veterans deserve, until the day they die.

Hobbs adds, "Words can't really say what's in my heart for the people like this who donate to veterans."

If you would like to donate a wheelchair or any other items to local veterans, just call the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office.
