OCOEE, TN, (WDEF)-Highway 64 is now open after, just in time for a busy weekend for the Ocoee community.
Jennifer Flynn of TDOT,"A lot of stuff going on in the Ocoee gorge this weekend, rafters, festivals, we want to make sure that was our goal to try and get this road open to at least one lane for the weekend"
TDOT have been working round the clock to keep the rock slide contained and say the wire meshing was integral to keep it from sliding onto the road
"Ken Flynn, Operations Director at Rock Slide,"A rock fence there that we put up because of an earlier slide, that rock fence has caught three slides so far and prevented them from coming into the road, as of Thursday it got so dangerous that we could not allow traffic through"
This was what the slide looked like just 36 hours ago.
Rubble and dirt were still trickling down the sheer descent.
Dozens of trucks and diggers were needed to clean the mess up.
A major slide also happened in 2010 leaving residents and commuters so disgruntled they set up a facebook page.
The one lane on highway 64 has temporary traffic lights in operation and TDOT is confident that everyone going to and from the Ocoee Festival will not encounter to many tailbacks.
