CHATTANOOGA, Tennessee(WDEF) - A pregnant Chattanooga 16-year old is recovering in the hospital from a fractured hip after she was shot in her lower back.
It happened Tuesday just before noon at the East Lake Housing development.
According to both police and neighbors, up to 8 shots were fired from a street on the back side of the housing development into an interior parking lot. One of those shots hit a pregnant teenager in the back. According to neighbors, people were running in every direction to get away while two men helped the teen walk to a nearby apartment to take cover.
The situation could have resulted in multiple injures due to stray bullets that entered nearby apartments. One of the eight bullets went through a window and came within inches of striking another woman who was sitting at that very same window.
At least three shots went through the window of another apartment where two woman and children where inside. The women agreed to talk to WDEF as long their identities were not revealed for fear of retaliation from the shooter.
"We were all sitting right here in the kitchen eating and when we heard it come through I picked her little baby up; the little girl, I picked her up and ran into the front room with her," said one of the ladies.
The same lady said everyone inside the apartment came within feet of becoming a gunshot victim.
"It could have been one of us that got hit but luckily god was watching over all of us," she said.
As for the person who did get shot, neighbors told WDEF she recently moved away from the housing development and was most likely an innocent bystander who was caught in the middle of a gang war while she was visiting someone.
"This war needs to stop going on. We need to get all these brothers and sisters together and have sign out here that says please stop the war from going on out here," said one neighbor.
The teenager's baby was reportedly unharmed and is doing fine according to police.
Investigators said a dark colored SUV may have been used by the shooter. There's no definite make or model but WDEF was told the vehicle could either be a Ford Expedition, Dodge Durango or a Chevy Blazer.
