Background checks on all gun sales, a ban on military-style assault weapons, and limiting high-capacity magazines to 10 rounds.
President Barack Obama wants Congress to take action on those ideas.
It's all part of an effort to reduce gun violence in the country.
After the build-up and speculation about the Obama Gun Control proposals...the actual program the president pitched was indeed wide-ranging, but it put the main burden on congress.
Here's part of his plan.
PRESIDENT "If you want to buy a handgun, whether its from a licensed dealer or a private citizen you should at least have to show you are not a felon, or somebody legally prohibited from buying one."
President Obama laid out his plans to curtail gun violence in the country by urging congress to move quickly on his proposals for background checks, limit magazine capacity and stop the sale of so-called assault weapons.
The noon speech, as expected, was not well received by patrons at one of the city's largest gun shops.
JENNIFER JOHNSON, GUN OWNER "Any sitting president does not have the right to make his own laws..that's what the legislature is for."
DORA DUKE, TAKING A GUN CLASS "I'm very concerned. I think we live in a world that's really anti-gun..and its not the guns fault..its just not. it's the responsibility of the one using it."
But the president's promise to use executive privilege to push his plans forward, were a separate issue.
He mentioned 23 specific proposals, including: stronger prosecution of gun law violators, and more thorough checks for mental health issues among gun buyers.
Some local citizens who are taking a class to carry concealed weapons, agreed with parts of the Obama plan.
DAVID SMITH, TAKING A GUN CLASS "You know fully automatic weapons..I, you know, I'm not really for that, but I think maybe pistols with single, or seven shots of whatever would be good."
CHARLES BIRDSONG, TAKING GUN CLASS "You know nobody really assault weapons should be banned. I was in the United States army. Nobody needs a big load of ammunition...and stuff like that."
Most of the action needed under the Obama plan will be in the hands of congress.
