EAST RIDGE, TN, (WDEF)- Shortly after 5pm Sunday evening this propane powered School Bus exploded twice and burst into flames when refueling at U Haul in East ridge.
Residents say ash filled the air for up to an hour after the explosions and they are deeply concerned having a propane tank so near to their homes and businesses
Steve Davis, Local Pastor
,"if it would have exploded we probably wouldn't be standing in this building here today"
Local resident Daniel Hill,"structure and environment to get back to school, and it does concern me, there are lives at stake, it's not just those lives, there are residents here too"
Propane Converter Josh Kapellusch of Mac Fuels
in Chattanooga says propane stations pose no more of a threat than regular gas stations.
"It's similar to how a gasoline station operates regards to safety there are fire extinguishers and no smoking allowed"
The blaze drew a large crowd of concerned residents and U Haul and East Ridge Fire Dept told News 12 they are unavailable for comment on the fire.
Residents believe it was the speed at which East Ridge Fire Dept responded that made sure no one got hurt.
Pastor Davis,"I appreciate our Fire Dept for being so prompt in getting out here to take care of the matter"
The bus was removed by Yates
tow trucks last night and was moved to a facility near East Lake this afternoon.
The cause of the fire is still being investigated and U haul on Ringgold Road opened for business earlier today.
