SPRING CITY, TN. (WDEF) -- A Rhea county woman and her boyfriend are in jail tonight charged with felony first degree murder in the death of her son last Friday.
Authorities are struggling to understand how this could have happened.
Officers say the child died from abuse, and two people, including the mother are facing the most serious charges possible---beating to death a 5 year old boy.
DET.ROCKY POTTER, RHEA CO. SHERIFF'S DEPT. "I've been the child abuse investigator since Sheriff Neal took over in 2002, and this is the worse one I've had to work."
It was difficult for even a veteran officer like Rocky Potter to talk about what happened to 5-year old Landon Robbins last week.
Investigators say it was here in a small trailer behind this home at 1715 Cawood Lane in Spring City.
Landon was found on a make-shift bed on the floor.
DET. ROCKY POTTER " Mother said he was unresponsive, she had tried CPR...and the child was not able to be resusitated."
The mother tried CPR and then called for EMS who rushed the child to the Rhea county medical center.
Potter, meanwhile, declared the area a death scene and began a thorough investigation.
Arrested and charged with aggravated child abuse were the mother...29 year old Jessica Robbins, and her boyfriend, 22-year old Bradley Adcox.
As Potter was interviewing the couple Robbins said the little boy had fallen from a swing set that day.
DET. ROCKY POTTER "There was a wound consistent with the backyard incident."
But the investigation didn't stop there.
The county medical examiner called District Attorney Mike Taylor .
DET.ROCKY POTTER "The autopsy preliminary came in from the U-T forensic center ..that evening of the interview they were charged with aggravated child abuse and neglect at the Rhea county sheriff's department. This morning, after speaking with the D.A...and going over other evidence we have obtained, felony first degree murder charges have been added to both individuals."
Detective Potter says working on cases like this one takes a toll on police, too.
DET. ROCKY POTTER "It is..it's hard...its very hard."
There were two other children in the trailer--- 4 year old and a 3 year girls.
They are now staying with relatives.
Robbins and Adcox will go before a judge on Friday.
