Rounding Third Ministries will be participating in a youth baseball world series event on Sunday at Camp Jordan.
A Former New York Yankees' World Series Hero will be the guest speaker. Over 2,000 players are expected to attend.
Former Major Leaguer Brian Doyle will be a part of the event. Doyle played parts of three seasons for the Yankees as a reserve infielder through 1980, but is best known for his inspiring, underdog play in the 1978 World Series.
Filing in at second for the injured Willie Randolph, Doyle played in six series games, batting .438 with 7 hits. He finished the series with a double, 2 RBI, and four runs scored, to help New York repeat as World Series Champions.
Rounding Third Ministries could be called a devotional on the diamond. It is a movement that mixes baseball with the Bible.
The founders of Rounding Third Ministries are trying to turn what started as a pregame prayer into powerful message from the mound.
The ministry has grown from just a couple of teams sharing a prayer to entire tournaments asking to be part of the program. Organizers say participation is strictly voluntary, and hope it will help promote good sportsmanship on and off the field..
"It promotes good character, it promotes good sportsmanship, it asks us to dig down and do what's right and sometimes that's difficult to do after you lose a hard fought game, but again that's where the message has to be carried even off the field. We've got to go beyond just the typical sports things that we learn," explains co-founder Bartlee Norton.
