58-year-old Steven Lee Waldemer is in custody for allegedly shooting and killing "Tanja" and wounding her handler, Deputy Donny Brown.
"Tanja" had only been on active duty for a few months.
Deputies attempted to execute an arrest warrant on Waldemer earlier this afternoon in connection with an allegation of sexual assault.
Officials say after the suspect refused to come out of the travel trailer he was living in, the Deputy and "Tanja" tried to enter the trailer.
"As she was led in the front door to try and apprehend the suspect, he fired a shot, killing the K-9. It hurts the same. When you have that animal, you're feeding it, watering it, bathing it, and sleeping with it, and the kids are playing with it, it becomes part of you," said Sheriff Steve Wilson.
Waldemer escaped for a short time after the incident.  Bloodhounds from Hays Prison eventually tracked the suspect to a field where he was taken into custody.
He was armed at the time he was apprehended. Officials say Waldemer was on parole from a kidnapping conviction in Idaho. He now faces charges from the sexual assault allegation and more from today's incident.
