CHATTANOOGA, TN. (WDEF) -- Cracking down on impaired drivers apparently is paying off for Tennessee.
The number of traffic fatalities in the state is down considerably from this time last year.
Lt. John Harmon told News 12 that the THP is going to run saturation patrols and will set-up 7 checkpoints throughout the district over the long holiday weekend.
Harmon thinks the crackdown on speeders, drunk drivers and those who don't wear seat-belts is part of the reason for fewer deaths.

Lt. John Harmon, Tennessee Highway Patrol]

"The Tennessee Highway Patrol traffic fatalities as of midnight last night are down 76 statewide from last year. And in our Chattanooga district which includes 12 counties we are down 28 fatalities from this time last year."

Harmon says in addition to drunk drivers, the THP will also be looking for motorists who are impaired because of drugs or prescription medications.
