This weekend marked the two-year anniversary of the April 27, 2011 tornadoes that ripped through our communities.

The American Red Cross teamed up with the United Way to hold a tornado preparedness event Saturday morning. Hannah Lilly, participant said, "A tree fell on my house in 2011, and maybe today I can walk away with some extra tips to help me be safer." Safety tips and disaster preparedness information were all available to the community at the IMAX theater. Greg Waite, American Red Cross Community Chapter Executive said, "With it being the 2 year anniversary of the storms, we know there were storms that happened one year ago and its also the six month anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, so its ironic, but its a great call to action to say, 'look we know we are under the gun.' We have to make sure we take action now."

More than 200 people experienced the movie Tornado Alley as part of the preparedness event. They learned what the tornado is, how it forms, the science behind it and how to be better informed. Waite said, "We are going to face severe weather. We need to get out in front of it, and let people know to take a few minutes and prepare because preparedness is hopefully going to save your life." Its important to prepare for possible disasters by having an emergency kit with basic supplies such as water, food, a first aid kit and a weather alert radio just to name a few. The next step is to make a plan and stay informed. Waite said, "We are faced with at any moment, we could face a tornado. We saw two weeks ago in Madisonville, we could see storms roll through. We live in such a vulnerable area. We have to make sure we are prepared."

The American Red Cross hopes to hold another event similar to this in the future.
