WALKER COUNTY, GA, (WDEF)- Pastor Dan Gilchrist,Chattanooga Valley PCA,"O Father God, it is times like this that we become keenly aware of our weakness, keenly aware of our lack of understanding."
A shocked and torn school community spent the day praying and consoling each other as a 6 year old boy was hit by the school bus he arrived on.
Walker County Coroner, Dewayne Wilson,"The child died immediately according to Georgia Law we are transporting the child to the GBI in Atlanta for an autopsy, forthcoming that report"
Authorities said they took all precautions to keep the young students away from the accident location.
Walker County Superintendent of Schools, Damon Raines,"Cover the windows of the cafeteria just in case we had to go through with a normal lunch that would keep the students from looking out the window, at that point we were also sending counselors around to the various rooms just to make sure students were okay in case they needed to talk to someone"
The young boy's family received support from counselors and their church immediately after the incident.
Parents say this is a very challenging situation for kids who are so young to deal with.
Kimberly Ann Tucker, Concerned Local Mother,"See how they feel and everything and try to explain what happened to the best of my knowledge to tell a 9, 7 and a 3 year old or 4 but yes we will talk about it"
The bus number and names of both the driver and the victim have not been released for privacy purposes.
The school did remain open today but on a soft lock down.
This is where the kids remain in their classes except for toilet breaks.
Counselors and therapy dogs will be hand for the rest of the week as the staff and students cope.
