DALTON, Georgia(WDEF) - Two people were injured Monday morning as a result of a chemical reaction at MFG
According to Dalton Fire Chief Bruce Satterfield, Workers inside the plant were mixing chemicals into a reactor when tragedy struck.
"The worker who was putting the chemicals in did not close the lid of the reactor fast enough so when the reaction started it blew back out through the lid and into that workers face," Satterfield said.
That employee who has yet to be identified suffered serious injuries and was to the Wellstar Cobb County Hospital. Another worker was also seriously injured but taken to a local hospital.
Firefighter say when they arrived on scene, there was gas cloud hovering above the plant. They also say the reaction lasted roughly 25 minutes. During that time authorities warned nearby residents about the potential danger.
"We asked most of them just to shelter in place. Don't go outside and if you are outside just stay indoors because you may smell the material. It can be an irritant," Satterfield said.
There was also cause for concern for workers at a company located right next door to the plant. An employee of One Source says she freaked out when she was stopped at a roadblock on her way into work.
"I was just wondering if anyone was hurt because I know our first shift comes in at six and I was like I know there's a chemical plant right next to our company so I was wondering if my boss got hurt or did anyone get hurt," said Saraya Oneal.
MFG development and manufactures a wide range of chemicals including Polymers, Surfactants, Esters, and other specialty chemicals.
