Volkswagen is taking precautions when it comes to severe weather.
They are building a hail net to protect new vehicles that roll off the assembly line.
Storms damaged over 100 new Passats in an outdoor lot of the plant last spring. Now Volkswagen is shelling out five million dollars to build a fabric net that will cover roughly half of the 5,000 space lot.
Construction on the net began this week and VW officials say they hope to have it completed by mid-April.
"We moved to Tennessee not knowing that such hail storms could could be so severe. We know it from other reasons in the world, for example, from Spain, that hail can be pretty severe for out cars, so we do the same protection here as we do there," says Guenther Scherelis, GM Of Communications for Volkswagen.
The net will be similar to one installed at the Nissan plant in Smyrna.
