Just what is an assault weapon?
President Obama is moving to curtail the sale and use of firearms like those used in the Sandy Hook tragedy.
But that may not be possible, because such a potentially-deadly firearm is not that easy to identify.

PRESIDENT "Congress should restore a ban on military-style assault weapons...and a ten round limit for magazines....applause."

The description of an Assault weapon conjures-up images of Rambo and other action heros mowing down the bad guys. There are many weapons that could fit that general description of an assault weapon......including an ordinary looking hunting rifle.
Even the AK-47 for sale here is not a fully-automatic weapon. Some guns just look meaner than others.

WILLIAM EDMOND, CHATTANOOGA "The determination of assault weapons is what's wrong with this country...they are calling everything assault..anything over single-action is called an assault weapon."

CHRISTOPHER BREWER, SHOOTER'S DEPOT "The way a gun looks doesn't affect the performance of the gun."

To be sure, the rifles used in some of the deadliest shootings were capable of filling the air with bullets.
But they were not illegal under current laws.
There are strong laws against owning fully-automatic weapons.

Congress may get bogged down with these physical descriptions of high-performance weapons.
Sometimes..its hard to tell by looking.

CHRISTOPHER BREWER "Its a 30 carbine from 1943..and this is a 22 long-rifle..the difference?..this one fires a big, big bullet that can kill a person...this fires a little bullet." "They look the same from 5 feet away."

The president's proposals would ask congress to make those distinctions without hindering hunters and sportsmen...but also giving some support and consolation to Americans who feel threatened by just the appearance of high powered rifles.

DefinitionEdit The term assault rifle is a translation of the German word Sturmgewehr (literally "storm rifle", as in "to storm a position"). The name was coined by Adolf Hitler[6] to describe the Maschinenpistole 44, subsequently re-christened Sturmgewehr 44, the firearm generally considered the first assault rifle that served to popularise the concept and form the basis for today's modern assault rifles. The translation assault rifle gradually became the common term for similar firearms sharing the same technical definition as the StG 44. In a strict definition, a firearm must have at least the following characteristics to be considered an assault rifle:[7][8][9] It must be an individual weapon with provision to fire from the shoulder (i.e. a buttstock); It must be capable of selective fire; It must have an intermediate-power cartridge: more power than a pistol but less than a standard rifle or battle rifle; Its ammunition must be supplied from a detachable magazine. And it should at least have a firing range of 300 meters Rifles that meet most of these criteria, but not all, are technically not assault rifles despite frequently being considered as such. For example, semi-automatic-only rifles that share designs with assault rifles such as the AR-15 (which the M16 rifle is based on) are not assault rifles, as they are not capable of switching to automatic fire and thus not selective fire. Belt-fed weapons (such as the M249 SAW) or rifles with fixed magazines are likewise not assault rifles because they do not have detachable box magazines. However, in this case, the M249 SAW has the ability for both being fed by belt or detachable box magazine. The term "assault rifle" is often more loosely used for commercial or political reasons to include other types of arms, particularly arms that fall under a strict definition of the battle rifle, or semi-automatic variant of military rifles such as AR-15s.

Assault Weapon is a term to maximize emotion. Obama's use of children and the media's flagrant lack of balance is a joke. Why is gun violence the highest in cities and states with the most restictive gun laws? What is the violence rate in England almost twice that of the US? Criminals and the very few incidents of mentally ill persons are the problem not whether or not my AR 15 has a bayonet lug or not. "Assault Weapon" Ban in 94 failed as it had NO impact on violence, Obama's plan will fail as well. Interesting we can't ban violent video games or movies but we can ban guns. What we see is a selective application of the constitution.
