The new Community Volunteers Active in Disasters (CVAD) organization held a meeting in Whitfield County.

The United Way of Northwest Georgia and the Whitfield County Emergency Management Agency established this group of volunteers. The organization will be able to respond in the event of a disaster, similar to the string of tornados that occured in April 2011.

The organization strives for communication with one another. Being prepared before a disaster strikes is key to being successful.

Sarah Egan, American Red Cross Emergency Services Program Manager said, "You can see in Ringgold, all of the different groups that have come in, and have worked to help rebuild and get everyone up and running. It's very important to have people come together ahead of time and plan, so that you are not meeting your partners the day after when something hits."

Any individual or company representative interested in volunteering with this organization can contact Michelle Smith at 706-226-4357.
