Tennessee American Water customers could briefly lose water pressure in the next couple weeks.

The water company started flushing its water distribution system Thursday.

It's a routine maintenance procedure, but it could mean your pressure is down for a bit.

Flushing the pipes helps clear any sediments and makes sure everything is up and running.

TennAm Spokesperson Kim Dalton says, "This gives us the opportunity to check our equipment, make sure the fire hydrants in the area are working, make sure all the valves in the area are working."

If water pressure or volume is low after flushing, check your faucet screens for trapped particles.

The flushing could leave your water temporarily discolored.

If that happens let your water run until it's clear again.

You should avoid using washing machines and dishwashers while crews are working in your area.

Weather permitting, here are the service dates and areas:

10/02 - Lookout Mountain, Elder Mountain, Lookout Valley
10/05 - North Chattanooga
10/06 - Red Bank
10/07 - Mountain Creek Road and Hixson Pike areas

10/09 - Brainerd area between Chickamauga Creek & Hwy 153
10/12 - East Ridge
10/13 - East Brainerd
