Tennessee's new ban on smoking in public places may encourage some folks to kick the habit.
A Centers for Disease Control survey finds 27% of Tennessee adults smoke, but about half tried to quit over the past year.
Hoping the ban will provide some smokers with an incentive to quit, the state just launched a special quit-line. The toll-free service provides a professionally trained quit coach to teach smokers how to overcome the addiction. Jay Collum, Hamilton County Health Department Tobacco Education Coordinator, says the coaches work "better with adolescents, women, elderly. They have coaches that specialize in those areas and they will set quit dates and appointments for future telephone counseling sessions."
The program has a one-year success rate of 25%. You can get a quit coach by calling 1-800-QUIT-NOW.

Thank you for the option, I

Thank you for the option, I salute this initiative. I think we need deeper initiatives to get some concrete results when it comes to tobacco. The problem is that many people prefer to ignore the fact that nicotine creates addiction and this addiction can lead us to death. A stronger informing campaign would work perfectly.

Privacy to Save Embarrassment!
I do think that this is a good idea of course, anything to get more people to quit smoking. Half the time, I think about when I quit and I think it may have been easier to go to an alcohol treatment center. Sometimes when people just aren't in the mood to go out, or feel ashamed/embarrassed to be seen in public, getting help, they can call from the privacy of their own home? That just may be genius!
