The Tennessee Senate started its day with a big item on the agenda. They voted 21 to 9 to override the Governor's veto of the "guns in restaurants" bill.
The Senate received the measure after House members voted 69 to 27 yesterday to overturn the Governor's decision. The veto override garnered more support than the original bill, which passed 66 to 23.
The proposal allows handguns to be carried in bars and restaurants that serve alcohol. Rep. Curry Todd, (R) Collierville, says "most of the states this has been in, Georgia for example, crime went down dramatically." Rep. Mike Turner, (D) Old Hickory, counters "some have said its worked other places, but I just think its potentially dangerous."
Governor Bredesen says he expected an override, but still believes guns and bars don't mix.
Don't worry. It depends on

Don't worry. It depends on the sign they post. The little gun with the red circle and bar across it does not constitue the proper signage to disallow firearms on a business' property. The sign must be in accordance with the statutes.

story title

i applaud WDEF for properly titling this story. all the other media outlets are still calling it guns in bars when that is so far from the truth.
it is illegal under current law to carry a gun into a bar, and it will continue to be illegal to carry a gun into a bar after the 40 day mark passes. a bar is an age restricted venue, and in the lettering of this new law, the permit holder can not carry in an age restricted establishment.
once again, thanks WDEF for giving this story the correct title.

Not only can criminals carry in restaurants, law abiding citizens can too!!
Im so happy:)About time the government sides with law abiging citizens. Criminals dont follow laws, thats why I think its funny the government tries to keep the tools that protect ourselves away from us! Now they are easing up on the law abiding citizens to protect ourselves, crime is going down! Even the brady campaign said that and they are trying to take guns away from us! How backword is that!

The law allows only citizens
The law allows only citizens with CARRY PERMITS to be armed in restaurants. Restaurant owners now need to realize that those of us with CARRY PERMITS should not be denied our right to carry in there establishments. There are already many WITHOUT carry permitts that are armed anyway. I will not eat in a restaurant that posts signs forebidding me that right. I urge all TN citizens with CARRY PERMITS to do the same.
