In Catoosa County, there's a debate brewing over a proposed Y-M-C-A.
The Y of Chattanooga wants to lease 7 and a half acres of land for a dollar a year for 25 years.
Under the proposal...the county would pay 5-hundred thousand dollars in sales tax funds for a gym and soccer fields plus be required to maintain portions of the grounds.
One local gym owner feels it's unfair for the county to subsidize a private business against an existing one.
And says the county is no financial shape to accept the proposal.

Rodney Waters\Owner, Rock Fitness Center

"You're taking our tax dollars and giving it to the YMCA and then the YMCA is going to charge us to use it. You're not getting a discount."

The county commission...Waters and the Y plan to discuss the issue further at a meeting tonight.

YMCA

I think its funny how you would get on here post under no name and start pointing fingers at an individual. If you want a YMCA get off your cpu and go out and lobby for it because apparently you have no clue as to what the whole issue is, what it entails and what any agreement would have done or not done for the county. I think its people like you in this county that scream i want i want and then have no idea at what cost it is or what it would do for the county. Read the articles and form an educated opinion not just get on here and post garbage that does not pertain to anything in this article. The commisioners will give them the land but not the money which is exactly how it should be. If the YMCA comes it has to come in like any other business would. Its not fair to not only the Rock, but the wave, benefit for women, curves, jack silvermans and all the others that paid to come in and also pay their tax money. Also, next time when you make claims that they were going to build a 5 million dollar place and that they were tax exempt make sure you can back that up with fax dont just post something without evidence to back it up, bc they never proved thier status then, they couldnt show that they gave out as many of these great donations and projects as they claim.

Rodney Waters lost his plow horse

Mr. Waters lost his plow horse when his lackey, former County Commissioner Bill Clark was voted out of office. Mr. Clark previously torpedoed a joint venture with the YMCA and Erlanger by ignoring the advice of Catoosa County attorney's on the tax exempt status of such a venture and used thousands of dollars of his discretionary tax payer funds to hire an outside attorney to give a different opinion. This was done when no single YMCA in the country was paying property tax. The tax question delayed the construction of a five million dollar YMCA that would have received no taxpayer funds. During the almost two year delay the economy tanked and once it was not shockingly determined the YMCA was in fact tax exempt they were in no shape to go into such a venture. Score one for Mr. Clark and Mr. Waters.

The old boy network is slowly dissolving in Catoosa County and Mr. Waters is not guaranteed a monopoly on anything. Maybe he should have done a better job in helping Mr. Clark get reelected. They've both already done enough to harm the citizens of this county and Mr. Waters seems hell bent and keeping any competition out of Catoosa county by any means necessary.

YMCA

I agree that the county should not do this. Why should tax payers pay for the Y to be built and then be charged an outrages amount to use it? Most Ga counties can't afford such outlandish proposals.
