Work Crews Dodge Major Rock Slide on Highway 64

Another major rock slide, the second one today, has closed highway 64 in Polk county for at least a week.

It came as crews were trying to move debris from the first slide, and only moments after a state geologist gave them a warning to clear the area.

WDEF News 12's Bill Mitchell and photojournalist Allen Fairbanks were the only video crew at the scene.

It was surreal!!  Like watching a Hollywood epic.

We were warned that another slide could hit right where we had been standing---but you don't expect this.

But here's what led up to that dramatic scene...

The site is the 17 mile marker alongside the Ocoee dam where rubber rafts are launched.

About 6:00 this morning, a portion of the granite shelf fell onto Highway 64 and blocked the westbound lane. TDOT hoped it would be cleared in hours. But, it wasn't over.

A couple of hours later this boulder, as large as pickup truck fell into the eastbound lane, and TDOT crews brought in private contractors to break it up with an impact hammer. The operator was working directly under the shelf that collapsed less than an hour later.

Geologist Vanessa Bateman drove all the way from the TDOT geotechnical office in Nashville and arrived around noon.

STEVE JONES, POLK CO. TDOT "She was the one we were waiting on... just so happened she got here and then it came down."

Ms. Bateman heard noises in the rock base, and immediately ordered everyone to move back.

STEVE JONES "That's what it sounds like...thump...it was moving."

Within half an hour, with all eyes on the mountainside, Vanessa Bateman's prediction came true.

TDOT and construction crews just a few yards away--east of the slide--are now at least 120 miles away.

When will it re-open?

STEVE JONES "I don't think one or two days..look at the size of those rocks, some of those rocks are as big as a house... it's gonna take a while."

As you can imagine, we wanted to talk to TDOT geologist Vanessa Bateman, but she was on the other side, or, as we mentioned earlier, 120 miles away by road.

But, in our book, she's the hero of the day.

hwy 64

for those of you who say let the people in a hurry or on business go another way, Lets see you travel an extra hour to get to your job just so "nature lovers" can take their time. We leave early enough to make time for slow drivers, but then again, that IS why there are numerous pull-offs all along the road, so you can stop and enjoy nature, instead of looking around weaving all over the road. I think some of you forget that for many of us that is the only route we have to work and to doctors.

The road should be left the

The road should be left the way it is. I agree that travelers and their "hurry" should be left on the interstates.. Only a few miles of it now are 2 lane, imagine the attempt at making ALL of it a 4 lane. Think traffic is backed up now because of the rockslide? The road itself is a natural tourist attraction, especially for motorcycle riders. Turning it into a complete 4 lane highway would just give more room for the idiots who have no respect for nature and the highway itself.

Hwy 64 Rock Slide

I live in the Copper Basin and have to commute to Chattanooga to work everyday. My wife commutes to Cleveland almost everyday. This probably will not be the last rock slide we see. Over the past four years I have wondered why TDOT has made it a priority to remove the vegetation (trees) from the steep slopes along Hwy 64. TDOT has cleared these trees from the Hwy to a point approximately 20 - 40 feet upon these rock faces. I figured that it was probably to prevent these trees from falling across the Hwy during heavy rain and snow events but you know it is one of those scenerios that you have to way your options. Do you want a couple of trees down across the road or do you want millions of tons of rock and earth on the road?
I know that TDOT has some intelligient engineers working for them, however, it seems to me that their book smarts has supersueded their common sense. I am not a engineer or geologist, but it is plain common sense that when you remove vegetation, especially trees, from the soil it will create erosion especially on slopes of the magnitude that we have along Hwy 64.

Hwy 64

I completely agree. I work on the river as a photographer and the river road is something i know better than most. I drive from one side of the river to the other at least 8 times a day on the weekends through the summer and have learned every nook and cranny of it. I do agree that they need to fix the road and use a little more common since about taking all the trees away. Putting the rivits in the road like they did this year was also a stupid move, messes up cars, and creates more vibration for the road itself. If you stand on the side of the road you can feel the whole road vibrate when a car hits the side rivits, which creates more of a chance of rock slides. Add that to the fact that they keep taking trees, and the recent rain and boom, rock slide. I hope for everyone's sake that they do build a new road that will be easier and faster for people commuting, however, i also hope for the sake of the entirity of polk county that they fix 64 as well. A lot of our economy depends on the river, and no thats not just because i work there, but it brings tons of business to the community and jobs that we need.

Highway 64

Let me begin by saying that was an awesome video...Now, after watching the video how can anyone say there shouldn't be anything done to Hwy 64?

Those of you who insist something should not be done either live in an area where you are not stranded if situations like this arise OR you are a retired transplant. Unless you depend on this road for your livlihood I think you need to keep your mouth shut. I live in the eastern part of Polk County. My husband, son and brother work in Chattanooga. How would you like for your family to leave 2 hours earlier in the morning just to be at work on time AND to arrive home 2 hours later than normal in the evening? Not to mention the worry of them driving a different road but imagine how tired they must be. My family isn't the only one affected by the detour drive to work, there are MANY residents of Eastern Polk County who have to commute to Cleveland or Chattanooga. IF you travelled this road even twice a week you would see the amount of traffic of local citizens travelling to and from work or travelling to doctor's appointments.

Now let's discuss what would happen if someone was sick or injured. Med Trans can't transport, so that would mean being air lifted to Chattanooga. Then you have to hope and pray it isn't raining and foggy so the helicopter can land.

It's all well and good when you're retired and you have no worries OR you live in a city where there are many ways out of a situation. Until you live the real world in the shoes of Eatern Polk County Citizens I suggest you shut up or stay where you are and mind your own business!

As for the jerk in Asheville, undoubtably you aren't a Christian or those words would never have come out of your mouth. But, let's go one step further, what IF a member of your family had been standing there when this horrific rock slide happened, what IF they had been seriously hurt or, as you wished on someone,to have been killed, would it have been so funny then? I think not!

If people would think before they speak this world would be a lot better place. I'm from Eastern Polk County, Tennesse and I'm proud of it!!

we need a bigger road!

As a truck driver that has to use this road and a resident of cleveland, i think we are 15 years overdue for a new road.....Lord knows the govt has spent millions of our tax dollars talking about it......keep the river road for the rafters and tourist......build a 4 lane over the mnt.....it would be better for the enviroment and the river to have a road away from the river....."Thats all i got to say about that" lol thanks

Highway 64 Rockslide

It takes a sick minded individual to make a statement like you did wishing that someone would get hurt. There is enough bad in the world today without you wishing more. Maybe someone will post their commment and say that they wish you had been the one standing there when the rocks came down. Now put that in your pipe and smoke it. This statement came from a residient of Polk County that lives just a few miles from the rock slide,

hiway 64

with todays techonology, just bore a hole through the mountains for a new hiway instead of calling it the autobaun , name it the Mountobaun. teh the tourist and rafter can have the old hiway.

My husband travels this road

My husband travels this road every day, usually in the dark. He had just passed when the first slide happened. There DOES need to be a better route from the Copper Basin area to Cleveland. Making the current river road wider is not the answer for all the reason listed above. WE NEED A NEW ROAD. Leave this road for the rafters and sightseers.

Sad no one got killed

That would have been a awesome video. The news reporter standing there then all of a sudden oushed over the side of the guard rail and killed. Sad they moved that would have been Hilarious!!!!

Asheville, NC

Hi,I am from the copperbasin

Hi,I am from the copperbasin area and what you said is stupid! My dad works for tdot and they are doing the best they can. i'm eight months pregnant and i have to travel through tellico to get to cleveland to my dr so i know like every one else how bad it is so does my sisters who travel it every day to school, but everyone complaining to each other instead of the big boss in charge isn't going to change any thing. You are a FREAKING LUNATIC

You are a FREAKING LUNATIC AND ANYONE THAT HAS READ YOUR POST PROBABLY SAYS THE SAME!!! Just when you think the ppl in this world can't get any worse ppl like you RUN THEIR STUPID MOUTHS!!!!! GET A LIFE!!!!!

Response to Sad comment

Why would you allow such a comment to be posted?
That person is either mentally disturbed or very confused as to what they were writing!

response to Sad comment

The person who said that it was a shame no one was killed obviously plays too many video games and thinks we could've just hit a redo or replay button and everyone would have magically be okay at the restart. What a sad individual to wish that people could have been in the way of that rock slide. I travel that road frequently between Cleveland, TN, and Greenville, SC. I would suggest that "Sad" go and set up a tent along the road and see if his wish can come true and he is part of the news story!

Why the "Sad" comment was posted...

Thanks for taking the time to post your thoughts.  We allowed the comment you referenced to be posted because it did not contain foul language, AND because it is a criticism of media in general and perhaps us at WDEF in particular.  I would rather criticism be public knowledge open for discussion than to not post the comment.  The work of our crew at the rock slide, Bill Mitchell and Allen Fairbanks, stands on its own.  I don't think you can find fault with what they did or allege they were thrill-seeking or otherwise being unsafe in their approach to covering the rock slide.  If you discount criticism of our crew, then either the comment is just anonymous internet snark or a somewhat violent illustration of how much public faith in journalism has fallen.  Call me crazy, but I'll believe the latter... especially after seeing some of the replies, not all of which can be posted due to profanity.  HOWEVER... if enough people ask for the comment to be removed, then I will consider doing so.

Best regards,

Dutch Terry

Removal

Let it stand Dutch. It serves as a reminder of 2 things. First and foremost: Freedom of Speach Second: Not all members of our society are SANE. The FIRST prevails. The people that would have this removed are most likely the same people that watch FAUX NEWS. If anyone needs removed its the likes of the fearmongering, hateful tirades of the "Journalists?" like Beck, Hannity and the likes. But hey, this is AMERICA and once again, FREEDOM of SPEACH. I watch WDEF faithfully as I believe you folks do an EXCEPTIONAL job at reporting the NEWS. Thank you for your time and KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK. P.S. I just LOVE both reading and posting. GOOD STUFF EH! Regards, ObbaYabba.

NEWS CREWS?

You are 1 SICK Puppy. I can ONLY agree with you if the "NEWS" crew consisted of: Bill O'Reilly, Hannity, Lou Dobbs (On his way to FAUX),Beck. THAT would be HILARIOUS!

sad no one got killed comment

the person that made this comment is an IDIOT !!!!
this persons remark should be removed .

Removed

FREE SPEACH YO!!! Unless of course it does'nt AGREE with YOUR view?

Foul Vermin Detained

I just look at it as another blessing that Almighty God puts barriers of stone between me, one of his children, and foul vermin such as You.

Sad?

Asheville must be hard up for a way in which to get his/her jollies. (Makes me wonder about people up thatway.) I'm glad and grateful that no one was injured. Thank you, Jesus!

4 Lanes Please

The highway needs to be a 4 lane with most of the sharp curves removed. This is 2009 not 1945. It has been passed time the highway department straightened out this highway. With the widening of the west side up to Ocoee it will only add to the traffic. Either widen the highway or stop all the vehicles over 6 wheels from traveling that part of 64.

re; 4 Lanes please

Which do you suggest to "remove the sharp curves" - blasting through the hillside or destroying the river? This is one of the most ignorant comments I've heard in a long time. It can be a dangerous road for people who don't respect it, but to destroy the beauty of this special area would be a travesty. I've lived in Iowa for close to 30 years now, but I always know when I'm getting close to "home" near Blue Ridge, Georgia when I turn onto Hwy 64 and the "river road."

re; 4 lanes please

Go back home to Iowa and stop telling people who have lived and worked here their whole lives how to feel about a road that should have been improved years ago. Until you have had to deal with it on a daily basis you have no right to make comments. No community should be shut off from its livelihood like we are right now.

I would take quite the

I would take quite the opposite approach, limiting traffic to business and freight ONLY. Anybody who's in a hurry to traverse this wonderful natural area has no business in it in the first place! Nature was there FIRST, and bigger, wider roads already exist: they're called INTERSTATES, and that's where you, and your hurry, should stay. Or better yet, at HOME.

hwy 64 rock slide

the 4 lane comment person doesnt know what kind of terrain
this is to make a 4 lane. the road is fine just like it is. if these rocks are disturbed, it could makes matters
like this worse. dont disturb nature no worse than we have
to. this isnt ATLANTA, its the MOUNTAINS. Im just glad no
one got hurt. thanks for the video channel 12.

a bigger road

I think they do need a four lane road through there. It sure would be a lot safer. When a big semi or tractor trailer has to cross over the yellow line to get around a curve. Or meet a big camper on the wrong side of the road. Because the camper driver is afraid he might fall off in the river. So he takes both lanes of the highway. Common since will tell you its not wide enough.

In the summer time all of these torist are up there. Parking half way in the road. Just so they can watch some dumie try to drown his self on a raft or canoe.

ocoee rock slide

Praise JESUS no one was hurt! We travel that road all the time going from Ooltewah to Lake Blue Ridge!
