Child safety advocate Marc Klaas shared the story of the murder of his daughter Polly today in Chattanooga.
He also brought his education campaign to the scenic city.
WDEF News 12's Mandy Odom has more.
Grandmother Ruby Iles says, "Well, anybody needs to do it because you don't know when something bad's gonna happen. I mean, you may have a picture but it may be out-dated. This way you have their fingerprints because God forbid that anything should ever happen your child."
Marc Klaas lost his 12-year-old daughter Polly in 1993.
She was kidnapped, raped, and murdered.
Now Klaas travels the country educating parents and encouraging lawmakers to pass legislation to keep children safe.
Klaas says, "What we do now is we try to give meaning to that horrible tragedy by creating a legacy in her name that will be protective of children hopefully for generations to come."
H.H. Gregg brought Klaas to Chattanooga on Saturday for the Print-A-Thon.
Parents could have their child's picture and fingerprint taken for free.
They also got a nine-point plan on what to do if there's an emergency and a do it yourself DNA kit.
Reporter Mandy Odom says, "Having information like this about your child could help in a time a crisis, but it will also give parents peace of mind."
"It would help me to know that I could take it to the police, and that way they would have something to go by," Iles says.
Klaas wants parents to talk to their kids about safety and he gave them some tips to help.
"They should always check with their parents first. They should always be outside with at least one other person. They should always trust their feelings. If something doesn't feel right, it probably isn't," Klaas says.
He hopes to help prevent incidents like what happened to his daughter Polly, but also give parents what they need to respond if an emergency happens.
