NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) - High school students who participate in voluntary extracurricular activities could be randomly drug tested under legislation advancing in the Senate.
The measure sponsored by Sen. Jim Tracy, a Shelbyville Republican, unanimously passed the Senate Education Committee on Monday.
Current law requires students to be tested only if there's a reasonable suspicion.
The new bill gives permission to local school districts to conduct more testing if they choose.
The companion bill in the House has been placed behind the budget, meaning the measure will be revisited if any money is left after the state's spending plan is set.
