Lajan Hogan had headaches, felt worn out, and was gaining weight. Even though several people on her father's side suffer from diabetes it's the last thing she suspected.

The disease has two forms. Type one diabetes means the body does not produce insulin, and the disease is usually diagnosed in children and young adults.
Type two means the body does not produce enough insulin or the cells reject the insulin. Educator Carol Fox helps people understand their diagnosis.
Carol Fox, RN, Diabetes Educator, "When we're not active and gain weight that insulin doesn't work as well. We're seeing more people, mostly type two, it's considered epidemic right now."
That's what happened to Wayne Hendrix. His doctor noticed over time his blood sugar had increased.
Hendrix, "I was getting borderline and technically was type two diabetic."
Hexdrix has seen the devastating complications of diabetes first hand.
Hendrix, "I had a friend, he ended up going blind and have all of his limbs amputated."
With help from the Chattanooga Lifestyle center, Hendrix has lost 18 pounds and no longer takes medication to treat diabetes.
Hendrix, "I don't want to rely on somebody in my latter years to take care of me."
[1]DiabetesCarol Fox shows diabetics how they can still lead a long, healthy life by changing their habits. That's exactly what Hogan plans to do.
Hogan, "I'd like to get to the point where I manage this, I'm not on medicine and I'm still enjoying life."
The CDC says more than 6 million Americans of all ages who have diabetes are undiagnosed.
