Nightfall and RiverNights Preview: Michelle Shocked & DeSol

By Collins Parker
Created Aug 7 2008 - 12:35pm

[0]We get a double bill this week at Nightfall.

Michelle Shocked is an independent spirit who has carved out a music career that's all over the place.

She began as a folkie in Texas, with a major leftie political leaning.

Shocked actually flirted with mainstream success breifly in the late 80s.

Here is the video of her best known song from 1988, Anchorage.

[0]But Shocked was never made for the Major Record Label machine.

She's been persuing her own course ever since.

Most recently, that has taken her to gospel music, and the release of ToHeavenURide last year.

Here, she gives the full gospel choir treatment to Yes, God Is Real.

Shocked will be performing here with The Lee Boys.

They come from the same Sacred Steel church tradition that gave us Robert Randolph.

Here is a performance of theirs last year in Asheville.

Jennifer Daniels will open the show on Friday Night at 7:00

Michelle Shocked and the Lee Boys take the Miller Plaza stage at 8:00.

[0]Riverfront Nights this week brings us latin rock with DeSol.

Albie Monterossa tried to make it as a Rock star in Jersey.

But it wasn't happening, until he went back and incorporated the latin rhythyms he heard at home growing up.

Now DeSol is touring behind a new album.

Here is the video for On My Way.

And here is a live performance and interview from a local television station in Austin, Texas.

[0]You can find more videos at DeSol TV [1].

It's a free concert down on the river at Ross's Landing.

The show starts at 7:30
