McCallie Student Dies
It may be several days before we learn what caused the death of a 17-year-old McCallie student Wednesday afternoon.
10th grader David Cooper collapsed in the gym while working out with other members of the school's rowing team.
McCallie's headmaster says David received immediate attention from the school's trained first responders.
He was rushed to Memorial Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
McCallie held a student assembly this morning in the chapel.
Headmaster Dr. R. Kirk Walker says, "Like all of us, they are stunned, and it's not the kind of thing that you expect to happen. So, they are kind of coming together as a family, learning to support each other through a very, very difficult time."
David is survived by his parents, Mike and Diane Cooper, a twin brother, Reid, also a student at Mccallie, and another brother and a sister.
