The first round of H1N1 injectable vaccines went fast in Hamilton County. In just three days, appointments for all 1,300 doses have been booked. Hundreds of people stood in line for their shot Monday, despite a recent poll showing a majority of the nation apathetic about the vaccine. Five year old Ali and her father were among those who waited in line at the Eastgate Town Center for their H1N1 vaccine. "We came all the way from Alabama," Jason Sullins explained. The injectable, unlike the FluMist is available for people 6 months of age and older. And it can be given to children, like Ali, who have a chronic illness or an underlying health condition. Ali has asthma and recently was hospitalized for pneumonia. "Just this ounce of prevention is worth them being sick and having to take a week or antiviral medicine," Tereia Sandifer, Ali's grandmother added. The last of the first round of injectables is expected to be given out Tuesday. Those people who've already reserved an appointment will be guaranteed a shot. But the health department continues to make appointments for the FluMist That's available for healthy, non-pregnant individuals between the ages of two and 49. "I think we've had great response from our community...even though some of the polls show people have been reluctant," Hamilton County Health Department Administrator Becky Banres noted. A Harvard University poll showed more than half of the Americans surveyed decided not to get the vaccine or hadn't made up their minds. Local health officials think once the flu season progresses, more people will get vaccinated.
