That's why for the elderly or those with respiratory problems like Reese, Leek recommends investing in high-efficiency or Hepa Filters.

Leek adds, "There quite a few dollars higher than a regular sponge glass filter but the particle resistance is a 100-percent better."

Another plus - Hepa filters can last several months longer than standard filters, depending on how many pets you have or how often you cook.

And experts say that's a good thing, since the number of asthma cases in the U.S. has doubled in the last 20 years.
