But for some people it might not be safe indoors either.
5-year-old Reese Rhodes was 2 when doctors discovered she had asthma. But to see her run around on the playground with her sister you wouldn't know. Father Randy Rhodes says, "Sometimes in the spring and summer she does breathing treatments and sometime they become more frequent during this time of year." However that hasn't been the case this year... Rhodes says, "Her mama's been keeping her in a lot and been doing activities with her at the "Y" and stuff trying to keep her out and that might have played a role." But as poor air quality continues around the Tennessee Valley... Chris Leek with the CC Dickson says without the proper equipment staying indoors might be as bad as playing outside. Leek says, "Houses that are built fairly recently in the last 10 to 15 years are pretty sealed up..codes force them in to that...older homes have more infiltration of particles." That's why for the elderly or those with respiratory problems like Reese, Leek recommends investing in high-efficiency or Hepa Filters. Leek adds, "There quite a few dollars higher than a regular sponge glass filter but the particle resistance is a 100-percent better." Another plus - Hepa filters can last several months longer than standard filters, depending on how many pets you have or how often you cook. And experts say that's a good thing, since the number of asthma cases in the U.S. has doubled in the last 20 years.
Another code orange day for the Tennessee Valley, and the same goes for tomorrow, meaning the elderly, very young and those with respiratory problems should limit their outdoor activity.
