Should Tennessee lawmakers approve wine sales in grocery stores?
Who cares anyway???
We live in an age where a person cannot openly voice his/her opinion without someone getting offended. We try to teach our children right from wrong and there are more people who have forgotten morale values so what does it matter how many people say no? The majority rules and more people will pitch a fit if they cannot have their way. The best solution is dont go to stores that are willing to forget right from wrong. In the end they will be held accountable for whatever action they chose.
wine sales
YES TO WINE SALES IN THE GROCERY STORES !
Yes Tennessee is backwards,
Yes Tennessee is backwards, proven by the recent election results. The vast majority of the country took a leap towards progress on Nov.4th and yet here they went the other way. How do you prove to these people that their continued support of the right wing is not in the economic interest of the lower and middle class here. Also, allowing religon kooks to determine public policy is not progress. The fact that wine isn't already sold in grocery stores shows that the church is the government here. Keep your beliefs where they belong, in the home and church. You do not have the right to legislate your puritan morals on normal people.
Tennessee is Backwards, so he says
This is yet another sad case of pure ignorance, an unfortunate example of today’s society. First and foremost, there are two primary reasons pertaining to this issue, whereby the writer is blaming “religious kooks” is highly incorrect, but not an uncommon belief by the highly misinformed. Following repeal of national prohibition in the U.S. in 1933, some states decided to continue their own prohibition against the production, distribution, and sale of alcoholic beverages within their borders. Other states decided to leave the issue to local jurisdictions, including counties and cities, a practice called Local option.
States were also able to restrict the importation of "intoxicating liquors" into their territory under the provisions of the Twenty-first Amendment to the United States Constitution which, while ending the Federal role in alcohol control, exempted liquor from the Constitutional rule reserving the regulation of interstate commerce to the Federal government. Thus states which wished to continue Prohibition could do so.
Among those states that did not choose to maintain complete prohibition, some chose to establish government monopolies over the sale of alcohol beverages within their borders. Most of these states have an Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) board and run package stores called ABC stores. These reasons vary from state to state, but never the less, a government control.
In addition, many special interest groups such as MADD, BADD, Women Against Violence and other Women rights groups, have lobbied the government in such bans; the religious sector does not pay to lobby government, otherwise they violate tax codes and lose their licenses. There is also the economic factor to calculate. At what point does the increase of sale of Alcohol outweigh the benefits of dollars earned versus detrimental adverse effects?
GET OVER IT
Big "O" won the election. Stop whining because you didn't get 100% of the vote. Get over it!!
Also, there is a product out there called SPELLCHECK. Try it you might like it.
By the looks of the poll,
By the looks of the poll, Tennesseans are in favor of allowing wine to be sold in grocery stores. And yes, these same people voted overwhelmingly conservative in the last election. Put two and two together. Conservatives are usually well educated, well rounded people. You liberals are so busy screaming, you refuse to even recognize this fact. And by the way, all the "change" that our new administration is bringing is nothing more than the "same" liberalism of Clinton. Let's see something new. Pretty boring.
Wine in Grocery Stores
I agree with selling whatever type of alcohol in any type of store. This state is seriously behind times. Not only with the alcohol sales but other things as well. This is not 40 years ago. Get out of the dark ages! Those of you that are opposed, are you seriously that afraid of how you raised your children for how they make decisions? Tempted? Are you afraid of your own self as to how you make decisions? Not to mention, the revenue that this state could make from the sale of wine and liquor. Beer is sold pretty much everywhere. What's the difference? Intoxicated is intoxicated, no matter how you get that way. I personally think it is ridiculous that I have to drive 40 miles to buy liquor. So another county/state gets the sales revenue, I take my alcohol home and enjoy it until I need to make the 40 mile run again. Now tell me what the difference is if I go buy it where I can or I could buy it here. I still buy it!
approve the wine already
Its comments from all of you old and outdated hush-hush elders that really tick me off. Welcome to the new generation. People still ask me if we use outhouses here in TN. I physically get upset because of all the backwards-ass people. I was raised to respect my elders and always will, but you had your lives to live and now its our turn. What your "generation" doesnt realize is that for us "the younger generation" wine conniseurs is that we are willing to spend 150-300 dollars on a good bottle of wine and that just may mean picking it up at a grocery store....what does that mean.....increased revenues for hamilton county. Im done having a fit, so just pass the law already
SO, HAVE ANOTHER FIT
So have another fit and MOVE ALREADY!
I hate to tell you, young
I hate to tell you, young person, that you will not be able to spend big bucks on a good bottle of wine when your taxes are increased. And I promise you they will be.
Also, where are all the comments from the " old and outdated, hush- hush elders " on this blog. I guess you could charge me with that, but I am only 40.
Honestly, your blog cracks me up. And I must say that I have never seen really great wine like you mentioned selling in a grocery store. You usually have to buy it at a winery or a specialty market.
Wine sales
Why not? we need more drunk drivers on the roads, killing our friends and family. What should be done is that alcohol be BANNED in the USA altogether, but that will never happen. The US is just too moral for that.
yesh
I tink dey shud be abl' ta sell all kins uf likker inna storz. I lak mogin daved maself. You got anneeting? How bout a tast?
Are you kidding ? Or are you
Are you kidding ? Or are you drunk.
I not dronk
Jus a lil tippppsee. Ineed a cupla more drinks for I can go ourt drivin tho, isss tha Merkin way.
Why not
Why not sell wine in grocery stores? Put the whiskey and gin and so forth next to it. Also the pot and crack. Drunk or messed up in the mind when driving home with the bottle open shouldn't bother anyone but the drinker. And when the under age teenage drinkers need a little lift they can work something out with a buddy that sacks groceries or a youngster working as a stock boy or girl. Lets give more people the opportunity to have alcohol easier and have the possibility to hurt or kill more innocent people. DOES IT SHOW? I AM AGAINST IT!!
Why does selling wine in a
Why does selling wine in a grocery store make it more likely that people will drink and drive than if they bought it at a liquor store? In theory, grocery stores are more common than liquor stores, so you would have one closer to your home, which means that you would actually be less likely to drive drunk. Don’t kid yourself; selling liquor in a grocery store doesn’t make it any easier to get than selling it in a liquor store. Somebody always has an older brother or friend, or there’s always a homeless guy that will buy what you need if you buy him a pint. If you want people to have better habits when it comes to drinking, what you really need is open dialogue between the parents and the kids. Europe has far lower rates of binge drinking because the drinking age is lower and people are introduced to it in a safe, controlled environment. Many kids wouldn’t even know what beer was if they didn’t see it in the grocery store and ask their parents about it. Then, like the drugs you mention, they wouldn’t be exposed to it until someone who didn’t care about them offered it to them and they would do something dumb like share needles or take random pills. The denial of knowledge to, or deliberate misinforming of, any person, child or adult, is the cruelest and most damaging thing you can do for someone. If my parents had taught me about alcohol and a little responsibility with it when I was younger, I probably wouldn’t be the happy little sot that I am today.
I DON'T DRINK
I don't drink, but those who do should have that right. In a liquor store, in a grocery store, who cares? Whatever floats your boat. It's a free country.
Unfortunately even if they
Unfortunately even if they let Wal-mart sell wine, it still won't be "nice" wine - it will be exactly what you pay for Wal-mart priced wine.
Wine Sales
It's time Tennessee moves into the the 21st century. We want to attract new businesses and people, but we send a negative message with our outdated and backward wine and liquor laws. If I want wine with my meal it's not always easy to drive to a liquor store. I like to shop for wine while I'm buying groceries.
Wine sold in grocery stores
Yes, wine should be sold in grocery stores. Every state I have ever lived in had grocery store wine sales. If you want to attract business and be treated like a modern city, you should act like one. In fact, if I was making the decision today on whether to move here or not, the lack of grocery store wine sales would be a deal breaker. Ask yourself who benefits by restricting wine sales to wine stores? The cost of wine is much higher here than in the surrounding states.
If you want to complain so
If you want to complain so much about our state go back to where you came from. It has worked out fine for the last 30 years of my life. So why change it now. If you want to buy wine go to a store where it is sold don't subject others who don't care to be tempted by the stuff. I think that Chattanooga is just fine the way it is, it may be old school but that is the way we like it.
It has worked out fine for
It has worked out fine for 30 years???? LOL So what you're saying is this state should remain just like it was 30 years ago? Never grow with progress? Well if that's the case, maybe VW should not build here, because TN and this area can't handle it because they chose not to keep up with the times. Get with it.
Wind Sales
I thought that prohibition was repealed. It seems to me that wine/liquor/beer should be sold where ever the seller, be it a grocery store, speciality store convenience store, resturant or etc. wants to sell it. I have lived in many places where you could buy alcohol in lots of different types of stores and it did not increase abuse. I also feel that if you want to order wines from vineyards or etc. out of state and have it shipped to you, you should be able to do so. I was in Italy a few weeks ago and wanted to have some wine shipped home, but because I live in Tennessee I was refuse. I was told by the Italian store owner that I would have to have it shipped to another state and pick it up. This makes Tennessee look so backwards. Adults should be treated like adults.
I voted yes on this because
I voted yes on this because I always approve of lowering restrictions on ridiculous prohibitions, but something comes to mind. I enjoy buying my liquor and wine at a liquor store because, at least at the one where I shop, the store owner and employees are incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and eager to help or answer a question. That is the added value of shopping at a “specialty” store instead of a big box store. You just don’t get that kind of customer service at Wal-Mart. I mean, Bob (the store owner where I shop) could tell you the specifics about the wines he stocks and the differences between regions, years, and everything else that goes into producing a fine wine. I really don’t want to imagine someone buying a bottle of “Great Value Brand” Chablis because the bottle is a dollar cheaper. I know there are bargain liquors and wines out there, but they are just for college students who haven’t learned any better yet.
wine sold in walmartttttttttttttt
IT seems that our elected law makers should find something better to accomplish besides wine in walmart or any other big chain store. Is that our biggest crisis that our state faces? Maybe they should do something that really matters.
What's the difference WHERE
What's the difference WHERE wine is sold ? Is there really such a big distinction between a grocery store, and a liquor store ? Grow UP !
Yes, they should approve
Yes, they should approve wine sales in grocery stores. I've lived in Illinois and California and they both do. Sometimes a liquor store just isn't convenient or near.
And when you have company, you often like to have some nice wine for dinner.
wine sales
It's time for Tennessee to come out of the dark ages.
