Charlottesville, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - The 20th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers have won five consecutive games, including a narrow victory over then-No. 18 ranked Pittsburgh, and will try to make it six straight as they host the Boston College Eagles in Atlantic Coast Conference play at John Paul Jones Arena.

Boston College ended a three-game losing streak with a win last Wednesday over Virginia Tech, but jumped back into the loss column with an overtime defeat at the hands of Notre Dame, 76-73, Saturday. The Eagles, at 2-6 in the ACC, are six and a half games out of the conference lead.

Virginia, on the other hand, is in sole possession of second place in the ACC at 8-1, just a game behind Syracuse. The Cavaliers escaped Pittsburgh, 48-45, Sunday for their fifth straight win in conference play.

Virginia holds a 9-7 all-time series lead over Boston College in a series that dates back to the 1971-72 season. The Cavaliers are 5-2 against the Eagles in Charlottesville, and have a two-game home winning streak against them.

Boston College held a slim 29-26 edge over Notre Dame at the half in the Eagles' last outing, but the Fighting Irish were able to battle back to force overtime. The Irish edged out the Eagles, 10-7, in the extra period and stole the win at Purcell Pavilion. Ryan Anderson led the Eagles in scoring with 21 points, adding a team-high six rebounds in the effort. Lonnie Jackson tallied 15 points and Joe Rahon added 13. Boston College shot 48.9 percent from the floor in the contest.

Olivier Hanlan had, by his standards, a very below average game against Notre Dame Saturday, as the guard scored just five points in 37 minutes of action. Hanlan is the team's leading scorer this season, netting an average of 17.9 ppg through 21 games played. Anderson is the only other Eagles player averaging double-digit point totals with 15 ppg. Anderson's 7.1 rpg mark is a team high, and Rahon leads in assists with 67 on the year.

Cavaliers guard Malcolm Brogdon came off a screen and drilled a 3-pointer with .4 seconds remaining in regulation to lift Virginia over ranked Pittsburgh Sunday in ACC action. The Cavaliers now find themselves ranked 20th in the nation. Brogdon led all Virginia players in scoring with 16 points against the Panthers, adding five rebounds and four assists. Joe Harris chipped in 11 points, and Akil Mitchell tallied a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Brogdon and Harris are the only two players averaging double digits this season for Virginia. Brogdon checks in at 11.8 ppg, while Harries is right behind him at 11.5 ppg. The Cavaliers have built their foundation this year on playing stellar defense, not scoring. The Cavs are holding their opponents to 55.5 ppg, while scoring 66.1 ppg themselves. Mitchell tops the squad with 6.7 rpg, and London Perrantes leads the team in assists with 83.
