Louisville, KY (SportsNetwork.com) - Kevin Ware, the junior Louisville guard who suffered one of the most gruesome on-court injuries in memory, has decided to transfer.

Cardinals head coach Rick Pitino and Ware's stepfather, Wesley Junior, confirmed the news to the Courier-Journal on Saturday

The 21-year-old Georgia native averaged only 1.7 points per contest in just under six minutes a game this season. That came after a sophomore season where he contributed 4.5 points and 1.8 rebounds over 16.6 minutes per contest to Louisville's national-championship effort.

Ware suffered a compound fracture of his lower right leg during an Elite Eight victory against Duke, and was lost for the remainder of the tourney.

He returned in November in an exhibition contest against Pikeville, but, according to the paper, a missed court date for a reckless driving charge followed by Ware's slow recovery began a series of events which led to his withdrawal from the program.

The paper revealed that Pitino shut Ware down for the season in December after another setback, and he stopped attending the team's practices and games altogether.

Speculation from several sources indicate that Ware will opt to continue his basketball career at a school closer to his home, with Auburn a likely choice.
