Recap: Tulsa vs. Marshall

Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - DeAndre Kane set a Conference USA Tournament record with a career-high 40 points to power Marshall past Tulsa, 105-100, in a triple overtime thriller in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

Shaquille Johnson also set a career mark with 25 points and Dennis Tinnon posted a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds) for the sixth-seeded Thundering Herd (20-12), who will take on second seed Southern Miss in a Friday semifinal.

The Golden Eagles also needed overtime -- though just one -- to advance past East Carolina earlier Thursday.

Eric McClellan's career-best 25-point performance was not enough for the third-seeded Golden Hurricane (17-14). Steven Idlet poured in 20 points and Scottie Haralson, Jordan Clarkson and Kodi Maduka netted 14 apiece in defeat.

MU's Dago Pena had just four points, but they came at a critical time: on a four-point play that turned a 95-94 deficit into a 98-85 advantage for the Herd midway through the decisive extra session.

Tinnon followed with a layup to reach the century mark for Marshall, and he dunked an alley-oop pass from Kane a bit later to seal the game.

"My guys know I reference boxing a lot, and that one was like the old days with Ali and Frazier and those cats, when they used to go at it," said Marshall head coach Tom Herrion. "I talked about it all season, at one point we are going to need each and every one of our players, and tonight was the night we needed everybody."

Tulsa missed multiple opportunities to put the game away in both regulation and overtime.

The Hurricane did not score a field goal in the final 3:25 of the second half and recorded only two points on a pair of McClellan free throws as they watched Kane and Johnson score the final six points to tie the game at 64 and force OT.

Marshall led for just 22 seconds in the first overtime period before Tulsa's Tim Peete knocked down a three-pointer in response to a Johnson trey. But Johnson and Kane again fought back, this time by drawing fouls on tough drives into the paint in the final minute. They collectively made 3-of-4 from the foul line for a 74-74 tie.

A defensive breakdown in the waning seconds of the second overtime led to another missed chance for the Hurricane.

With 17 ticks on the clock, Peete made the first of two from the charity stripe for an 86-84 edge, but his second hit the front of the rim and Marshall's Jamir Hanner grabbed the board. He sent an outlet pass to Kane, who charged past three defenders in the paint for yet another tie game.

"We had plenty of opportunities to win the game; we've been in one other triple OT game before," Tulsa head coach Doug Wojcik said. "It's hard to comment on one or two plays, but we had plenty of chances to win the game, we just couldn't put it away."

Three starters for each team were forced to watch at least a portion of overtime from the bench, as 71 cumulative fouls caused nine players to foul out.

In another move that bucks tradition, the Sharks completely revamped their on- ice leadership structure not by selecting new players to wear the precious singular letters on their uniforms, but by stripping the captaincy from Joe Thornton, removing the alternate tag from Patrick Marleau and leaving the other "A" vacant after Dan Boyle signed as a free agent with the Rangers.
