Recap: Southern Miss vs. Marshall

Memphis, TN (Sports Network) - Damier Pitts had 24 points and the Marshall Thundering Herd took down the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 73-62, in the semifinals of the Conference USA Tournament.

DeAndre Kane added 14 points and seven assists for the sixth-seeded Thundering Herd (21-12), who will play in their first-ever Conference USA title game on Saturday against top-seeded Memphis.

Dennis Tinnon tallied 10 points and 13 rebounds for Marshall, which was fresh off of a triple-overtime victory over Tulsa in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Thundering Herd will be playing in a conference tournament championship game for the first time since their last NCAA Tournament appearance in 1987. Marshall defeated Davidson to win the Southern Conference that year.

Angelo Johnson ended with 24 points for the second-seeded Golden Eagles (25-8), who beat East Carolina on Thursday after having a bye in the first round. Darnell Dodson donated 13 points.

Trailing by five, 52-47, with 10 minutes to play, Marshall shifted the momentum with a 17-4 run. Pitts tallied 10 points during the burst, including two free throws with 3 1/2 minutes left for a 68-58 margin.

Southern Miss, which has never made it to the Conference USA title game, didn't get closer than seven the rest of the way.
