Recap: Tennessee vs. Middle Tennessee

Knoxville, TN (Sports Network) - Bruce Massey recorded a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders to a 71-64 victory over the top-seeded Tennessee Volunteers in the second round of the 2012 National Invitation Tournament at Thompson-Boiling Arena.

LaRon Dendy added 10 points and nine rebounds for Middle Tennessee (27-6), which defeated its in-state rival for the second time in 11 tries.

Jeronne Maymon led Tennessee (19-15) with 17 points and seven rebounds. Jarnell Stokes chipped in 15 points while Trae Golden contributed 14 points and eight assists in the losing effort for the Volunteers.

The Blue Raiders led by as many as 12 points in the opening period before taking a 36-34 lead into halftime. Middle Tennessee knocked down 52.2 percent of its field goal attempts in the first frame while the Volunteers shot 40.7 percent from the floor and went 0-of-5 from three-point range.

Tennessee took control after the break and led by eight points with 11 minutes left to play. The Blue Raiders would not go away and battle back. Bruce Massey put MT up with a layup with 1:34 left, then blocked Golden's jumper on the next possession. Massey added another jumper and Raymond Cintron iced the game by making four-of-four at the charity stripe in the final minute. Tennessee did not make a field goal in the final 7:11.

The Blue Raiders held a 46-30 advantage in the rebounding battle. Tennessee made only 1-of-13 of its attempts from beyond the arc in the contest.

Middle Tennessee advances to the quarterfinal round to face sixth-seeded Minnesota.
