Recap: Florida State vs. South Alabama

Tallahassee, FL (Sports Network) - Antoine Allen had 21 points and Freddie Goldstein hit three free throws late in the game as South Alabama upset No. 25 Florida State, 76-71, as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic to open the season.

"We weren't scared at all. We were ready for the challenge. We gave it our all for 40 minutes and we came out with the win," Allen said.

Goldstein had 11 points and five rebounds, Augustine Rubit added 12 points while Mychal Ammons had 11 points and 11 boards for the Jaguars (1-0), who posted 17 wins last season.

Montay Brandon and Terry Whisnant II each had 11 points while Terrance Shannon and Michael Snaer each added 10 for the Seminoles (0-1), who won their first ACC tournament championship last season, but lost to Cincinnati in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.

"They were a little tougher than we were," Florida State head coach Leonard Hamilton said. "They played with a lot more maturity. They executed their game plan better than we did."

The game was tied at 69-all after Ian Miller hit a 3-pointer for Florida State, but Shannon fouled Goldstein on a shot from beyond the arc and he calmly drained all three for a 72-69 advantage with 26 seconds to play.

Snaer missed a 3-point attempt at the other end, with Ammons grabbing the rebound and hitting his two foul shots with 12 seconds to play to seal the win.

Play was tight through the first several minutes of the game, but a 9-0 run by South Alabama was capped on consecutive threes from Xavier Roberson and Allen for a 23-16 lead with 8 1/2 minutes left.

The Seminoles were able to keep it close and a Snaer jumper made it a three- point game with 26 seconds left, but Javier Carter slammed home the ball right before time expired and the Jaguars took a 41-36 lead into the break.

Ammons' dunk to start the scoring in the second half gave South Alabama a seven-point lead, but Florida State scored the next seven to tie it and from there neither team led by more than four points until late in the game.

Game Notes

It was the first time Florida State lost a season opener since 2002 ... FSU has won 10 of the 13 games against South Alabama ... The Jaguars hit 9-of-15 from long range, while the Seminoles made just 5-of-21.
