Recap: VA Commonwealth vs. Wichita State

Richmond, VA (Sports Network) - Malcolm Armstead's jumper with four seconds left proved to be the game-winner for the Wichita State Shockers, who hung on to beat the VCU Rams, 53-51, at the Siegel Center.

VCU (1-1) forward Juvonte Reddic was fouled with less than a second remaining and had a chance to tie the game at the foul line, but he missed the first free throw and was called for a violation on the second attempt, allowing Wichita State (2-0) to remain undefeated despite making just 3-of-19 from behind the arc.

Carl Hall, the Shockers lone returning starter from last year's team, led the way with 12 points, 11 boards, and three blocked shots. Celanthony Early scored 13 off the bench, while Armstead finished with 11 points, six assists, and four steals.

Reddic ended up with a game-high 22 points on 8-of-11 from the field for the Rams and ripped down 10 rebounds as well. Darius Theus added 15 and five assists. The Rams' starters scored 48 of their 51 points, with Rob Brandenberg scoring the only three bench points.

Neither team shot well from the floor in the first half. Wichita State hit just 2-of-12 three-point attempts, while VCU shot 31 percent overall. The Shockers led 28-24 at the break.

Down by three with less than a minute remaining, VCU tied the game on a Theus three-pointer. The Shockers let the clock bleed all the way down to four seconds before Armstead hit the long two-pointer that won his team the game.

Neither team led by more than five points in the game. VCU could not take advantage of its free throw opportunities, making just 12-of-23.
