Recap: Penn State vs. Purdue

University Park, PA (Sports Network) - A.J. Hammons tallied 15 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks as the Purdue Boilermakers outlasted the Penn State Nittany Lions, 58-49, in Big Ten action at the Bryce Jordan Center.

Hammons did most of his damage from the foul line, missing just one of his 12 attempts from the stripe for Purdue (12-11, 5-5 Big Ten), which had lost its previous two games. Ronnie Johnson led the way with 16 points, while Donnie Hale recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds off the bench.

For PSU (8-14, 0-10), D.J. Newbill led all scorers with 17 points while adding seven assists. Ross Travis logged eight points and eight boards for the Nittany Lions, who are winless in 10 games since the calendar turned to 2013.

Neither team shot greater than 36 percent from the floor in the first half, but Penn State was able to take a 25-24 lead into halftime by draining a pair of 3-pointers. Purdue went without a long-range bucket in the opening frame.

The game remained tight until midway through the second half when the Boilermakers broke a 33-33 tie by ripping off a 16-4 run, and they never relinquished the lead from that point forward.

Purdue outscored PSU from the foul line on the evening, 18-9.
