Recap: Texas vs. Baylor

Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Sheldon McClellan scored a game-high 23 points off the bench as the Texas Longhorns captured a 79-70 win over the Baylor Bears in Big 12 Conference play at the Frank Erwin Center.

McClellan knocked down 9-of-14 shots from the floor, including 3-of-6 beyond the arc, in 26 minutes of action as the Longhorns (14-16, 6-11 Big 12) posted their second win in the last three outings. Also scoring in double figures for the hosts were Myck Kabongo and Ioannis Papapetrou with 19 and 18 points, respectively, the former adding eight assists and six rebounds as well.

The Bears (17-13, 8-9) were paced by Pierre Jackson, who tallied 22 points and handed out eight assists, followed by Isaiah Austin with 15 points and six boards for a Baylor squad that has now fallen in five of the last six games and is considered to be on the outside looking in when it comes to the NCAA Tournament at the moment.

In a closely contested first half, the teams traded leads nine times, with a 3-pointer by Jonathan Holmes with 13 seconds remaining in the frame giving Texas a 36-34 edge at the break. The Bears shot just 9-of-25 from the floor through the first 20 minutes of action, but managed to stay close thanks to 11-of-12 at the free-throw line.

Late in the second half Baylor was able to establish a slim 57-56 advantage at the 5:22 mark on a layup by Deuce Bello, but the lead was short lived as the Longhorns put together a 7-0 run in order to move ahead for good and eventually claim the nine-point home win.

Both programs shot 9-of-23 from beyond the arc on the night, but the visitors were limited to 40.4 percent accuracy from the floor overall, compared to an even 50 percent (27-of-54) for Texas.

Baylor entered the game having won a school-record 17 straight matchups against opponents from the Lone Star State.
