Recap: Kansas vs. Oklahoma State

Lawrence, KS (Sports Network) - What a way to earn your first road win of the season.

Marcus Smart tallied 25 points and nine rebounds and Oklahoma State snapped No. 2 Kansas' 33-game home winning streak in an 85-80 triumph on Saturday.

The Cowboys also put a halt to Kansas' nation-leading 18-game winning streak.

With the Jayhawks trailing by three with less than five seconds remaining, Smart stole the ball away from Elijah Johnson to seal the win.

"It's hard for teams to come into their home court and get a victory. We're one of the few teams that have done it. We couldn't believe it," Smart said.

Kansas' 33-game home winning streak was the second longest active stretch in the country behind Syracuse, which has registered 35 consecutive home wins.

It's the Cowboys' first victory over a top-five team on the road since 1958.

Markel Brown added 28 points for Oklahoma State (15-5, 5-3 Big 12), which came into the tilt 0-4 away from Stillwater. The Cowboys have won three straight games.

Ben McLemore netted 23 points to lead the Jayhawks (19-2, 7-1), who lost to Oklahoma State at home for the first time since 1989.

"They were better than us, they deserved to beat us." KU head coach Bill Self said. "We were awful and they were good. Markel Brown was terrific. We didn't have an answer for him and of course Marcus Smart just beasted our little guards in the second half."

Eight of Smart's nine rebounds came on the offensive end. Two of them went for putbacks in the span of three possessions to give the Cowboys a five-point margin. Smart then hit two free throws to cap a 13-2 swing for a 75-68 Oklahoma State advantage with 1:12 to play.

A bit later, after Le'Bryan Nash hit two free throws for a 78-72 lead, Andrew White III nailed a 3-pointer, stole the ensuing inbounds pass and drew a foul. He split the pair from the stripe to pull the Jayhawks within 78-76 with 36 ticks left.

Phil Forte hit two free throws before White answered with two at the other end. Smart then split a pair with 24.6 to play to make it a one-possession game and Johnson pulled the hosts within 81-80 with a layup with 18.8 seconds remaining and Forte hit two more foul shots at the other end with 7.9 to play.

Johnson aggressively drove along the right wing for an apparent dribble- handoff for a potentially game-tying triple, but Smart poked the ball away from Johnson.

The Cowboys used a 16-3 run to open up a 26-12 cushion midway through the opening stanza before heading into the break with a 40-34 edge.
