Recap: Texas vs. Oklahoma State

Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Marcus Smart scored a game-high 23 points to lead 22nd-ranked Oklahoma State to a 72-59 win over Texas on Saturday.

Smart, who went just 4-for-21 from the floor in an overtime win over Baylor on Wednesday, finished 6-for-12 shooting. The freshman also grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists and had five steals for the Cowboys (17-5, 7-3 Big 12), winners in five straight and six of their last seven overall.

Markel Brown added 17 points and Le'Bryan Nash scored 14 and pulled down nine rebounds in the triumph.

"I am happy with our win. I think our guys really were locked in, especially with defense. They understood what we need them to do on that end of the court," said OSU head coach Travis Ford.

Ioannis Papapetrou scored 15 points to go with seven rebounds and four assists and Demarcus Holland added 13 points for the Longhorns (10-13, 2-8), losers in eight of their last 10 games.

"You can look at the stats and say we didn't play defense and look at the percentages and say we played badly, but the bottom line is we're not playing as a team," Papapetrou said. "Guys aren't buying in to what we want to do offensively and defensively. I don't think we really know how to play as a team."

The teams traded baskets over the opening minutes of the first half, but Smart's tip-in with 10 1/2 minutes left ignited a 15-8 run to put the Cowboys ahead 26-17 with just over five minutes left in the half.

The Longhorns, though, scored the next five points to pull within 26-22 with 2:42 remaining.

Oklahoma State held Texas scoreless for the remainder of the half to take a 29-22 lead into the break.

The Cowboys pushed their lead to 41-30 following Smart's trey with just over 13 minutes left.

Brown's tip-in with just under 6 1/2 minutes remaining started an 11-5 run and Texas couldn't get closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Game Notes

Smart has scored at least 21 points in three of his last four games ... Texas holds a 45-37 lead in the all-time series ... Oklahoma State snapped an eight- game skid in Austin ... Texas guard Myck Kabongo served the final game of a 23-game suspension, and is expected to join the lineup on Wednesday when the Longhorns host Iowa State.
