Recap: West Virginia vs. Texas

Morgantown, WV (Sports Network) - A single free throw by Aaric Murray, his only point of the night, proved to be crucial with just 9.3 seconds remaining as the West Virginia Mountaineers held on to defeat the Texas Longhorns, 60-58, in Big 12 Conference action at WVU Coliseum.

Murray missed all three of his field goal attempts in the outing, but he did lead the Mountaineers (11-11, 4-5 Big 12) on the glass with eight rebounds, the most important of those coming at the end of the game.

Deniz Kilicli and Jabarie Hinds both tallied 14 points for West Virginia, followed by Eron Harris with 13 as the squad posted a second-straight win and completed the season sweep of the Longhorns (10-12, 2-7) who lost in overtime at home back in January by a score of 57-53.

Texas was paced by Sheldon McClellan who led four starters in double figures with his 14 points, adding a team-best eight rebounds as well. Javan Felix responded with 12 points and seven assists, followed by Julien Lewis and Ioannis Papapetrou with 10 points apiece as the team bowed for the second time in the last three outings.

The Longhorns shot just 31.0 percent from the floor in the first half, yet led by as many as seven points midway through the period before falling behind by seven at the break, 32-25.

In the second half the Mountaineers pushed their lead as high as 11 points, but the visitors not only closed the gap, they also managed to take the lead at 49-47. However, down the stretch the 'Horns were held without a field goal for more than four and a half minutes which allowed WVU to again pull out to a five-point advantage at 59-54.

Trailing by a score of 60-56 with time running out, the Longhorns made things interesting with just 0.7 seconds remaining after McClellan was fouled attempting a 3-pointer from the left side. McClellan knocked down the first two attempts to make the score 60-58 and, after a timeout, missed the third shot on purpose, but the ball was rebounded by Murray to secure the win.

West Virginia overcame 16 turnovers and a mere six offensive rebounds by outscoring Texas at the charity stripe, 20-11.
