Recap: Rice vs. Texas-El Paso
Houston, TX (Sports Network) - John Bohannon, Julian Washburn and C.J. Cooper all poured in 10 points for the Texas-El Paso Miners as they outlasted the Rice Owls, 67-56, in Conference USA action at Tutor Fieldhouse.
Cedrick Lang narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 11 rebounds off the bench for UTEP (16-12, 9-5 C-USA), which has won back-to-back games. Jacques Streeter handed out seven assists for the visitors.
Tamir Jackson paced all scorers with 20 points as the Owls' (5-23, 1-13) extended their losing streak to eight games. Julian DeBose added 14 points, while Max Guercy chipped in 11 points and six rebounds.
UTEP was down a pair midway through the first half, but it managed to close the stanza out on a 23-11 run to carry a 34-24 lead into intermission. The Miners shot 51.9 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes while holding Rice to just 32.1 percent.
Although UTEP's field goal efficiency dipped to 42.3 percent in the second half, its lead was never in doubt, extending its advantage to as many as 24 points.
