Recap: East Carolina vs. Appalachian St

Greenville, NC (Sports Network) - Maurice Kemp and Robert Simpson both tallied double-doubles to lead the East Carolina Pirates to an 82-72 victory over the Appalachian State Mountaineers at Minges Coliseum.

Maurice Kemp scored 21 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and blocked four shots for ECU (4-0), while Robert Sampson logged 17 points and 18 boards. Miguel Paul chipped in 14 points and six assists.

For Appalachian State (1-3), Jay Canty scored a career-high 25 and Nathan Healy put up his first-career double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Jamaal Trice came off the bench to score 10 points for the Mountaineers.

ECU shot 50 percent from the field in the first half to take a 38-33 lead into intermission. The Pirates led the whole half, but never by more than seven points.

The Pirates continued to be the frontrunners in the second half. The Mountaineers managed to get the game to within three, 72-69, with just over three minutes to play following a Canty bucket, but ECU ripped off a 7-0 run to pull away.

Neither team shot well from three-point range, with ECU making 4-of-16 and Appalachian State going 3-of-12.
