Recap: California vs. Drake

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - A pair of free throws by Justin Cobbs with 17.2 seconds remaining gave the California Golden Bears a little breathing room as they pulled off a 73-70 comeback win over the Drake Bulldogs as part of the DirecTV Classic at the Anaheim Convention Center.

Cobbs finished with a game-high 21 points for the Golden Bears (4-0) as they remained perfect on the season. Allen Crabbe, who entered the game as the nation's top scorer with 26.7 ppg, was limited to just two points in the first half and 15 overall. Before fouling out, Richard Solomon contributed 10 points and five rebounds.

The Bulldogs (1-2) had five score in double figures, with Ben Simons, Seth VanDeest, Richard Carter and Gary Ricks all coming up with 13 points, while Jordan Clarke delivered 11 and a team-best 10 rebounds in the setback.

California led by as many as 10 points midway through the first half, but a Simons jumper with 31 seconds remaining in the period knotted the score at 33-33 at the break.

A key turning point for the Bulldogs in the second half came when Cal was whistled for a pair of technicals and the subsequent four free throws were converted by Simons to put Drake up by three, 47-44. Drake's lead reached as high as eight points with just over eight minutes remaining, but the Bears refused to go away and locked up the win when Clarke missed a pair of free throws with only 1.5 seconds to play.

The Bears shot just 3-of-11 behind the three-point line, but made up for it with a 37-25 advantage on the glass.

With the victory, California will now take on Georgia Tech on the winner's side of the tournament bracket. Drake will contend against Rice on Friday.
