Recap: Southern Miss vs. Memphis

Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Geron Johnson tallied a career-high 25 points and matched his career-high with seven assists and four steals as the Memphis Tigers defeated the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, 89-76, in a Conference USA tilt at Reed Green Coliseum.

Chris Crawford notched 16 points and six helpers for Memphis (20-3, 9-0 C-USA) while D.J. Stephens and Adonis Thomas netted 11 points a piece.

Dwayne Davis paced Southern Miss (18-6, 7-2) with 25 points on 9-of-14 from the floor. Daveon Boardingham added 14 points and Jonathan Mills had 11 rebounds as the Golden Eagles dropped their second consecutive game after winning 10 straight.

Memphis came out of the gate scorching from the field, making 15 of its first 20 shots. Crawford was a big reason why, as he came off the bench and drilled his first four outside shots. The Tigers finished the half having shot 65.5 percent from the field and led 47-39 at the break.

Southern Miss cut the deficit to 65-61 midway through the second half on a Davis jumper, but fell behind by 14 points minutes later after a torrid Memphis rally, which Johnson capped with one of his four triples. The Tigers made 12-of-13 free throws in the second half while Southern Miss managed just 5-of-10.

Memphis has now won 14 games in a row which is the second longest active winning streak in Division 1.
