Recap: Wagner vs. SMU

Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - Jonathon Williams scored 13 points and brought down seven rebounds to lead the Wagner Seahawks to a 63-53 victory over the SMU Mustangs in the opening round of the Cable Car Classic at the Leavey Center.

Eric Fanning added 11 points off the bench for Wagner (5-4) which has won four of its last five.

Nick Russell scored a game-high 20 points for SMU (8-4) which also got a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double from Jalen Jones. Ryan Manuel added 15 points as well for the Mustangs who have lost three straight.

Wagner connected on just 9-of-22 field goal attempts in the first half while SMU hit on 11-of-31 to take a 30-26 lead at the break.

In the second half the Seahawks again had nine field goals but outscored the Mustangs, who hit just 7-of-22 shots from the field, from the free throw line (18-6) to pull away for the win.

Wagner will play Santa Clara and SMU will take on Alcorn State in the second day of the event.
