Recap: Southern Miss vs. Denver

Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Dwayne Davis led the way with 22 points as the Southern Miss Golden Eagles cruised to a 61-50 victory over the Denver Pioneers in a non-conference game at Reed Green Coliseum.

Davis put on a shooting clinic by making 8-of-10 attempts from the field, his only three-point try, and all five of his free throws for Southern Miss (6-0), which is off to a 6-0 start for the first time since 2006-07. Jerrold Brooks added 12 points, Neil Watson dished out five assists, and Michael Craig pulled down nine rebounds to help power the win.

Royce O'Neale led Denver (1-4) with 22 points and also grabbed six rebounds. Chris Udofia made an impact on the defensive end of the floor with five steals and three blocks for the Pioneers, who had their losing streak extended to three.

Denver was cold from the floor to start the game and made only 2-of-12 attempts from beyond the arc in the first half. The Golden Eagles shot 47.4 percent from the field before the break to take a 23-15 advantage into the intermission.

The Pioneers converted only 34.3 percent from the floor after halftime, but they did manage to sink seven three-points in the second half. Southern Miss led by double-digits for the majority of the final 20 minutes as it drained 17-of-21 attempts from the charity stripe to keep the visitors at bay.

After Davis broke the 0-0 tie just over four minutes after tip-off, Denver trailed the rest of the way. The Golden Eagles enjoyed a 33-26 advantage in the rebounding battle.
