Recap: USC vs. Stanford

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Jio Fontan's free throws in the waning seconds lifted the USC Trojans to a 71-69 victory over the Stanford Cardinal in each team's Pac-12 Conference opener at the Galen Center.

Fontan finished with a game-high 15 points for USC (6-8, 1-0 Pac-12). Eric Wise added 14 points, Dewayne Dedmon tacked on 11 and Chass Bryan tallied 10 more. With the win USC has already matched its total of conference victories from a year ago.

Andy Brown scored a game-high 17 points off the bench for Stanford (9-5, 0-1) which had won five of its previous six. Aaron Bright contributed 12 points. Dwight Powell finished with 11 and Josh Huestis had a double-double of 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Stanford led 42-33 at intermission after shooting 51.7 percent from the field while knocking down 7-of-16 shots from beyond the arc. USC also shot well at 52.0 percent and notched 4-of-6 shots from 3-point range.

The Trojans stormed back in the second half behind a 50.0 percent shooting effort. The Cardinal managed to hit on just 26.7 percent of its field goal attempts.

Brown tied the game at 69-69 with 27 seconds remaining but on the ensuing possession Fontan was fouled and calmly sank two free throws. The Cardinal had two chances in the final seconds but both shot attempts were off the mark.
