Recap: Cal Poly vs. UC Irvine

San Luis Obispo, CA (Sports Network) - Chris Eversley finished with 24 points and six rebounds to push the Cal Poly Mustangs to a 72-67 victory over the UC Irvine Anteaters in a Big West Conference tilt at Mott Gym.

Chris O'Brien chipped in 16 points for Cal Poly (7-6, 3-0 Big West), as it picked up its third win in a row. Jamal Johnson also got into the mix by producing nine points, five rebounds, four assists, and four steals.

Adam Folker paced UC Irvine (7-9, 1-2) by netting 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the floor. Alex Young contributed 14 points to go along with five assists while Chris McNealy tallied 11 points in 19 minutes of action off the bench.

The Anteaters shot an even 50 percent from the field in the first half, but that was not enough to overcome their 10 turnovers before the break. Cal Poly converted 10-of-12 free throw attempts in the opening 20 minutes to take a 36-25 lead into the intermission.

UC Irvine came storming back after halftime and Young drained a 3-pointer just over five minutes into the period that evened the score at 40. Young then drained another triple and Folker added a layup to give the Anteaters a five- point edge. The Mustangs hung around and went back on top for good when O'Brien dropped in a layup with 1:14 remaining. Eversley and Johnson both made clutch free throws down the stretch to put it out of reach.

Cal Poly outscored the visitors, 21-9, at the free throw line and sank 7-of-15 attempts from beyond the arc to stay perfect in league play.
